Believe it or not, there are tons of organizations that will help you recycle your used cell phones, computers, and rechargable batteries. Your used devices can be reused by various charities, or recycled to make new parts. Since we cannot list every single one, we have compiled a list of convenient ways to recycle.
Call2Recycle is a program that helps recycle rechargeable batteries and old cell phones. Call2Recycle works with Radio Shack, and many hardware and cellular stores. Go to the Call2Recycle website and find the drop off locations in your area. Recycling with this program is free.
Best Buy offers a recycling program for most of your used technology. You can find Best Buy recycling kiosks at almost every store (check website for store listings) in which you can recycle your rechargeable batteries, cell phones, ink cartridges, CDs, DVDs, PDAs, Smart Phones, and even your used Best Buy gift cards. For the larger devices, Best Buy will help you recycle your TVs, computers, and DVD players. For larger equipment, Best Buy charges a $10 handling fee, but will offset this charge by giving you a $10 gift card to their store. There is a limit of 2 recycled devices per person per day.
Staples offers a recycling program with some incentives. Staples will help you recycle computers, monitors, laptops, printers, faxes, and all-in-ones in their store. Large equipment will have a $10 per piece recycling fee. At no charge, Staples will recycle your keyboards, mice, and speakers. Their best incentive is the $3 in Staples Rewards towards your next cartridge for every ink and toner cartridge you recycle. If you are a retail or contract customer, Staples offers a free recycling program for cell phones, PDAs, pagers, digital cameras, chargers, and rechargeable batteries. The recycling of cell phones is through an organization called Collective Good. This organization allows you to select the charity you want to help and will take your information so that you can receive a tax credit for donating your mobile phone.
With these options, you can now get rid of that box of used cell phones, chargers, and recharable batteries in a responsible way. If you have a favorite charity to donate used computers or cell phones to, please let us know!
